There is lots of excitement when a child is born. Parents endure sleepless nights feeding and changing diapers. New infant’s stomach can only hold about 30 ml, but as the baby grows and its growing stomach holds much more, it can sleep longer.
Soon after a few months, parents are excited to see their child eating baby food. Not long after that, the child can finger feed.
As the days turn to weeks, the weeks to months. The infant is now walking, eating from the family table.
Soon, parents are planning potty training. There is so much excitement with every milestone.
Ablility to talk and communicate, leaning to read and write, the first day of school, going through grades to finish high school.
Parents can’t believe the baby is now a young man or woman.
Everyone of us understands this growth process from infancy to young adult. Parents will be quick to seek professional help if the baby is not growing or walking or talking as expected.
Because we have inherent understanding that a baby should not stay a baby but grow to adulthood, to stature of Adam.
Now, let talk about spiritual growth or maturity.
when we are born into the Kingdom of God, He expects us to “grow up into Him (Christ) in all things ” Eph 4:15
That is why
Ephesians 4:11 (KJV) – says
” And He gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
12: For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
13: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ”
It is clear that God would like us to mature and not stay babies.
The first step in our maturity is understanding that we need to grow.
Some people believe that once they have received the Lord as their Lord and Savior and have assurance of life with God, that is where it ends.
As we have read above, that is actually the beginning.
I am going to give an example that in no way is parallel to the knowledge and riches of God. He is great beyond words can describe Him.
Imagine you are talking to your 6 month old infant about how you plan to invest money for him and plan to send him to a particular university..
Would He understand you? If you repeat same conversation to your 17 yrs old child… it will be different.
Or imagine giving your one year old girl $ 20,000 cash. She would crample the paper, throw it in the air, gigle as it lands on her head or face.
I think it is clear there is so much we don’t know about God. Not that He is knowable, but I am sure He has a lot He wants to tell or teach us, but we can’t handle or comprehend it if we are not maturing.
So how do we grow?
A baby’s physical growth depends on proper nutrition and, with time, it grows.
Our spiritual growth also depends on nutrition (God’s Word) and most importantly OBEYING it.
John 14 (KJV) –
21:” He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.”
Another crucial thing to spiritual maturity is OBEYING, the leading of the Holy Spirit indwelling us.
John 16 (KJV) –
13: “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.”
Let us read his word and obey it, let us obey the leading of the Holy Spirit
Hebrews 6:1 (KJV) –
“…..Let us go on unto perfection…”Heb 6:1
Shalom.
